About

Introduction

India, it is often said, is not a country, but a continent with a population of 1.2 billion people. Stretching from the frozen summits of the Himalayas to the tropical greenery of Kerala, its expansive borders encompass an incomparable range of landscapes, cultures and people. Walk the streets of any Indian city and you’ll meet representatives of several of the world’s great faiths and you may hear numerous languages.

India is a country of multitudes and diversity. India has two official languages: Hindi and English. But there are 25 other national languages and more than 500 dialects are spoken across the country. The country has more than 800 television channels, of which 250 are news channels.

Since 1991, when India opened its economy, it has driven the economic boom in Asia along with China. Spurred by the reforms, the economic revolution started Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in late 1980s, India is changing into a country with new consumer goods, technologies and ways of life. Today, it is the second-largest producer of computer software in the world, with its own satellites and nuclear weapons.
